Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about preparing for your UK driving theory test with Luma.
What is the Driving Theory Test?
The Theory Test is a national exam you must pass before you can book your practical driving test. It checks your knowledge of driving laws, road signs, safe driving practices, and your ability to spot hazards.
Driving Theory Test: Luma - contains official DVSA-licensed questions, hazard perception clips, and Highway Code updates — we have everything you need to prepare for your Real Driving Theory Test!
What does the theory test include?
The official DVSA test has two parts — and we help you prepare for both:
1. Multiple-choice questions – 50 questions drawn from the DVSA database. You need 43 correct answers to pass.
2. Hazard perception – 14 interactive clips where you identify developing hazards. You need 44 out of 75 points to pass.
You must pass both sections on the same attempt to earn your certificate.
Our app mirrors this exact format, so your practice feels just like the real thing.
Who needs to take the theory test?
If you're getting your first UK driving licence (car, motorcycle, LGV, PCV), you must pass the theory test before booking your practical test.
Even if you already have a provisional licence, this step is required before you can drive solo.
Is this the official DVSA test?
No — the test itself takes place at an official DVSA test centre.
Our app is a DVSA-licensed preparation tool, designed to help you study the similar questions, videos, and topics you'll face in the real exam.
How much does the real theory test cost?
The DVSA fee for the official test is:
• £23 for cars
• £23 for motorcycles
(Fees may change, so check the official DVSA website before booking.)
You can try a free version or unlock a full learning kit in our app to prepare for your Real Driving Theory Test.
How long is the theory certificate valid?
Your pass certificate lasts for 2 years.
If you don't pass your practical driving test in that time, you'll need to retake the theory test.

What happens if I fail the official test?
Don't worry — it's common to need more than one try.
If you fail, you'll need to:
• Wait 3 working days before rebooking
• Pay the DVSA fee again
The app keeps your learning stats, so you can focus on weak areas and come back stronger.

Do I need to bring anything to the official test?
You'll need your UK provisional driving licence.
If you have your theory pass certificate, bring it too — but it's not essential. DVSA examiners can verify it digitally.
Can I drive while I'm learning?
Yes — if you hold a valid provisional licence, you can drive with:
• A qualified supervising driver (21+, full UK licence for 3+ years)
• L-plates (or D-plates in Wales) clearly displayed
• A vehicle that's insured for learner driving
