Changes to Driving Test Booking Rules in 2026

22 March 2026
Changes to Driving Test Booking Rules in 2026

Driving test bookings have been fiddly and workaround-heavy, but DVSA is tightening rules in 2026 to reduce abuse and improve identity checks.

Key Changes and Dates

  1. From 31 March 2026: Only two changes allowed per booking — date, time, or test centre combined. After two changes, you must cancel and rebook to adjust further.
  2. From 12 May 2026: Only the learner can book/manage tests on GOV.UK, confirming identity and agreeing to new terms. Instructors cannot book/manage for learners but can assist if present. Existing bookings remain valid.
  3. From 9 June 2026: You can only move your test centre to one of your three nearest centres, limiting wide-area hopping.

What Counts as a "Change"?

After Using Both Changes

You must cancel and rebook for any further adjustments — this affects availability and planning.

Instructor Role from May 2026

Instructors cannot book or manage tests for learners but may assist while the learner completes it themselves on GOV.UK.

Identity Confirmation and Terms (from 12 May)

Learners must confirm identity and accept new terms when booking or managing tests online; DVSA will email instructions before implementation.

The "Three Nearest Centres" Rule (from 9 June)

You can only switch your test centre among your three nearest ones based on your recorded address, encouraging local bookings and limiting gaming slot availability.

📝 Practical Tips

Existing Bookings

Bookings made before May 12 remain valid but managing changes after March 31 follows the two-change rule; after May 12, learners must manage bookings themselves.

📅 Summary Timeline

Book with intention, rely less on instructors for admin, and plan carefully under these new rules starting in 2026.
